Hampden-Sydney struggles on the road, falls to Shenandoah

Hampden-Sydney starting quarterback Carter Sido was sacked and injured late in the opening half Saturday. That unfortunately set the tone for what became a rough road trip to Winchester, as Shenandoah University beat the Tigers 35-7.

With Sido injured, Hampden-Sydney turned to sophomore backup Wade Warren, who came off the bench to pass for a game-high and a career-high 144 yards. But the Raleigh native’s work wasn’t enough to hold off the Hornets. Shenandoah took control early and didn’t let up, shredding the Hampden-Sydney defense for more than 247 yards rushing.

Terry Hicks ran for 27 yards and the Tigers’ only touchdown on 14 carries, adding 40 yards receiving. Fellow sophomore Ethan Dowdy had five catches for 58 yards, while Manning Lasso added two catches for 20 yards on the day.

Junior strong safety Markevus Graves-Franklin finished with a game-high and career-high 16 tackles, including nine solo, for the Tigers. Freshman linebacker Frank Brewer also had a career day, recording 13 tackles, including nine solo, along with a sack, one pass breakup and one fumble recovered. Senior free safety Joseph Pierre had 10 tackles to equal his career-high, along with a fumble recovered, while senior linebacker Walker Marsh and junior defensive end Eddie Allen each added career-highs with nine tackles apiece. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 5-4 overall, 3-3 in conference play on the season.
