Lancers women end season with loss

The Longwood women’s tennis team’s season came to a close with a 7-0 defeat to Charleston Southern at the Gary Clark Banks Sr. Tennis Center on Saturday.

The Lancers finish the year 7-10 overall and 1-4 in the Big South, missing out on qualifying for the conference tournament through a series of tiebreakers.

The Buccaneers improved to 10-6 overall and 3-1 in the league with the dual-match win. CSU received doubles victories from Noa Boyd and Jessica Braun and Khyanna Singh and Brenda Yoris. Boyd and Braun beat Phoebe Mitchell and Karina Rizvanova, 6-1, at No. 1. Singh and Yoris beat Kashmira Manohar and Nina Hederich, 6-4, at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match was halted at 6-5 with Kassandra Di Staulo and Marina Skegro leading Oriana Izarra and Feline van Eijkelenburg.

In singles, Skegro defeated Mitchell, 6-2, 6-1 on court three. Boyd then topped Izarra, 6-2, 6-2, on court two and Braun sealed the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win against van Eijkelenburg from the top spot in the lineup.

Di Staulo defeated Sophia Marchetta, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 while Singh defeated Rizvanova, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4.

The day finished with a three-set battle between Hederich and Yoris, who was victorious, 6-7 (1), 6-0, 1-0 (3).
