Maroons top Tigers in semis

Hampden-Sydney College’s (H-SC) lacrosse team had an impressive season, but it was not able to successfully defend its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament title.

The No. 2 Tigers fell 14-8 to No. 3 Roanoke College on Friday in the ODAC semifinals in Lexington.

“We were disappointed in the loss because we were most likely a win away from another NCAA Tournament appearance, and we did not play our best game from an execution standpoint,” H-SC Head Coach Jason Rostan said. “With that said, I was very proud of what our team accomplished this season, winning several big games and earning a bye in the ODAC tournament — a first for our program since the start of the six-team format in 2009. I cannot say enough about our 18 seniors and their leadership; what they were able to accomplish over four years was truly special.”

Rostan noted at the beginning of the season that “I think it’s the biggest senior class in the history of the program, and a lot of them have been starting or playing a lot for us for three and four years …”

After Rostan helped lead the Tigers to a record-setting, championship run in 2017, his first year as head coach, they continued to break new ground this season. With their 14-13 home win over Lynchburg College to complete the 2018 regular season, the Tigers clinched a new single-season school record for ODAC wins at eight.

Lynchburg, holding the fourth seed, ended up winning the ODAC tourney, defeating Roanoke 13-8 on Saturday.

H-SC finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 13-5. It was 8-1 in the ODAC during the regular season.
