As part of the federal stimulus package known as the CARES Act Longwood University along with many other institutions of higher education received a portion of $14 billion in grants

According to Assistant Vice President of Communications Matt McWilliams, Longwood received and has distributed the entirety of the $1,610,289 to qualified students following federal requirements.

“The funding was split equally among those students, and each student will receive $618.87 by June 1,” McWilliams said. “The university knows how challenging the last few months have been for many families and hopes these grants will provide meaningful assistance when it’s needed most.”

Last month, Congress allocated a portion of funds to colleges and universities to directly help students who have been financially impacted by expenses related to the Covid-19 epidemic.

The CARES Act grant is for students who have had expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus–this includes housing and dining plans, travel expenses, technology or additional food expenses.

“Longwood knows these are difficult times for many students and families, and that these grants will provide some meaningful assistance as you navigate these challenges and, we very much hope, stay on track with your education.” Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success Dr. Jennifer K. Green wrote in an email to students.
