Imagine what life would be like without the U.S. Postal Service.  Daily delivery would stop.  Letters, cards, bills, solicitations, packages – all sorts of correspondence would have no place to go, and would end up stacked in warehouses or just thrown out.  

What would be the effect on voting-by-mail?  What about International mail? – That Christmas card to relatives overseas, or mail from foreigners to the USA?  Goods and packages arriving in the United States with no one to deliver them.

If we don’t pay attention, the postal service may very well disappear.  It is estimated that the postal service will run out of money to operate as early as this coming September, if nothing is done to stabilize their finances.

Why is the U.S. Postal Service in such dire straits?  Mail volume is down more than 30% because of the coronavirus pandemic.  Add to that, the mandate from Congress that the postal service prefund retiree health benefits for 50 years in advance, starting in 2006, to the tune of more than $5 billion per year.  No other entity, public or private, is required to do this.

If we citizens do not raise the alarm and protest the very real danger that the postal service may go out of business,  we run the risk of having no postal service in the near future. 

Write to or call all your elected representatives, and demand that Congress take immediate action to save the USPS.
