Coronavirus cases in Prince Edward County continued to climb rapidly in the Friday morning update of case numbers from the Virginia Department of Health.
After jumping by 10 cases in the Thursday update from 19 to 29, Prince Edward’s cases went up five more cases Friday morning to a total of 34 cases.
The county currently has two coronavirus outbreaks. One is at the Piedmont Regional Jail where four cases have been confirmed. The second is at the Farmville Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. It is unclear how many positive COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed at the facility. At least one of the two people who died in Prince Edward County as a result of the virus was a resident at the facility.
Prince Edward County has now bypassed Buckingham County as having the highest number of cases in the Piedmont Health District. Buckingham’s case number remained at 31 in Friday’s update.
Except for the Prince Edward increase, other cases in the coverage area remained the same. Cumberland County still has 10 cases, Lunenburg County has three and Charlotte County has eight cases.
Statewide, Virginia has 11,594 cases with 1,8,37 hospitalizations over the course of the pandemic and 410 deaths.
