Dr. Wilkie Chaffin, long-time Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation district director, was recognized at the 2019 Annual meeting of the Virginia Association for Soil and Water Conservation Districts (VASWCD), for outstanding work with the VASWCD.
Chaffin is an elected director from Prince Edward County and currently serves as the treasurer of the Piedmont SWCD, VASWCD area V chair and vice-president of the VASWCD Educational Foundation.
He has served as the president of both the VASWCD Board of Directors and the VASWCD Educational Foundation. In addition, he has served on numerous committees and in other leadership roles.
Chaffin and his wife Dora have supported the work of SWCD employees through their generous endowment to support scholarships as well as supporting the recognition of outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District employees. Chaffin has also been honored by the VASWCD with the Bobby Wilkinson Award in 2011 (awarded to outstanding SWCD directors) and the Watershed Connections Outstanding Director Award for his work with local watershed initiatives. The Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District serves Amelia, Nottoway and Prince Edward counties and provides technical, financial and educational resources in order to advance conservation of soil, water and other natural resources.
The Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts represents 47 soil and water districts across the state.
