National FFA Week was observed Feb. 23-29, across the country as well as in Buckingham County.

Buckingham County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Daisy Hicks, recognized the Buckingham FFA Chapter during the February school board meeting.

During the Feb. 12 meeting, Dr. Hicks read and signed the FFA Week proclamation and the chapter was able to speak to the Buckingham County School Board about the activities throughout the 2019- 2020 school year.

The BCHS student body and staff were asked to participate in the FFA Week Spirit Days to bring attention to various areas of the agriculture industry and FFA.

During the week FFA members participated in several different events during and after school. Monday, members stayed after school for a movie night which also allowed for an update of the spring’s activities.

On Tuesday, the Virginia State Officers visited with FFA members at BCHS as a part of their National FFA Week Tour. After school, the members enjoyed a trip to Funquest in Lynchburg. This is a networking event that allows members from the Southeast Area to gather in a non-competitive setting.

Wednesday, members volunteered at the Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center as part of the National Day of Service though the National FFA Organization. That evening, Appomattox High School hosted the Piedmont Federation contests that included the Creed Speaking contest and Small Engine Troubleshooting contest. Emma Staton placed third in the Creed Speaking event and Austin Wickizer placed second.

Members stayed after school on Thursday to practice for the contests at the Southeast Area Rally in March. Friday, members gave the BCHS staff a small “thank you” for their support of the organization.

The FFA would like to thank those in the community who support the Buckingham FFA and Agricultural Education Courses. Without the community’s support we would not be able to participate in events such as state convention, career development events, and leadership activities.

We also appreciate those who have come into the classroom as guest speakers, assisted with hands-on laboratory projects, and supported our plant sales.
