Enjoy the day at Holliday Lake State Park, located at 2759 State Park Road, Appomattox, on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. – noon for a fun adventure. Winter may seem like a deadly quiet time of year, but the park is still very much alive in February; you just have to know where to look, listen and smell. Get low near the ground along the edge of Saunder’s Creek and you will see dry leaves, hear the rushing water, and maybe smell something strange. If you brush the leaves aside, you might find the stinky culprit — skunk cabbage. Just past the beautiful plant is a small depression in the ground filled with water. The surface appears calm, but the water is actually churning with movement as young marbled salamanders search for food. There is a lively world beneath winter’s cold grasp. Join park staff and Virginia Master Naturalists as they take an up-close look at two of the park’s most unique organisms. This program includes a half mile walk, so wear clothes and shoes appropriate for the journey and the weather. Feel free to bring a lunch for after the program. Contact the park office with any questions regarding park programs or to set up private programs for a group. Starting point is shelter #2. No fees for the adventure, and children are welcome. For more details, call (434) 248-6308 or email hollidaylake@dcr.virginia.gov.
