The Farmville Police Department is investigating multiple shots fired in the McDonald’s parking lot Sunday, Jan. 12. Although two vehicles were struck by bullets, no injuries have been reported at this time. One arrest has been made.

According to a release from the police department, at approximately 9:12 p.m. Sunday, police responded to 308 South Main St. for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers determined that multiple gunshots had been fired in the McDonald’s parking lot. Two vehicles were struck, although no injuries have been reported. 

An emergency alert notification was sent out to Longwood University students at 9:38 p.m. Sunday stating that police were investigating a person with a gun on campus. Students were advised to go inside to a locked and secure location.

Witnesses on scene reported that the incident involved several black males that were observed running south on Main Street, the release cites. 

While combing the area for evidence, Javon Rashaad Brooks, age 19, of Farmville, was found hiding in a wooded area just off of Putney Street. Brooks was in possession of a handgun. He was then detained and later charged with carrying a concealed weapon and reckless handling of a firearm. He is being held at Piedmont Regional Jail without bond. 

At 11:10 p.m., students received another emergency alert notifying them that the campus had been secured and that it was safe to move around.

The release highlights that assisting in the investigation were officers from Longwood University Police Department, Hampden-Sydney College Police Department, Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police.
