Buckingham County will have aluminum can collection day on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9:30-11:30 a.m., weather permitting, at the Dillwyn Recycling Center. Come bring all those aluminum cans you have collected and earn a few bucks.
Third Liberty Baptist Church, located at 2244 Carter G. Woodson Road in New Canton, will hold a special program, commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with guest speaker the Rev. Dr. Patrick Bland, Pastor of Mt. Pero Baptist Church, Powhatan. This event will honor Dr. Daisy Hicks, superintendent of Buckingham County Public Schools and the Rev. Margo Bruce, principal of Fluvanna County High School. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, with the theme of “Dream, Believe, Do.”
Keep in shape at Central Virginia Health Services. The fitness center hosts daily activities, to include yoga on Mondays and Wednesdays, kickboxing and Weight Watchers on Tuesdays, and Tai Chi and Rebounderz on Thursdays. For more information call (434) 581-3271, ext. 10601.
The Holliday Lake 4-H Education Center is offering a Natural Resource Education weekend on Jan. 17-19. Workshops for this program include archery, air rifle, bird treats, composting, cooking, deer ecology, duck decoy painting, edible insects, knot tying, owl pellets, riflery, road kill, introduction to shotgun, snakes and wildlife ecology. This program is for 4-H members ages nine-19 and 4-H volunteers, and all youth must be accompanied by a responsible adult. No youth under the age of nine may attend. Decoy Carving Workshop is being offered at Holliday Lake Education Center. Learn to carve your own decoy or sharpen your carving skills. Participation is limited to 15 participants for a better instructor participant ratio. Rustic but comfortable bunk style lodging. Linens not provided. A health form (no physical required), and other information will be sent upon receipt of registration form and payment. Check in is Sunday, March 8, at 4:30 p.m. and departure is March 12 at 10:30 a.m. Participants will receive an overview of decoy carving and construction, working on decoys and applying antiquing to decoys and Q&A. Instruction and kits provided by carver Ed Morrison. Beginners are welcome and carving experience is not needed. Register by Feb. 21. The next 4-H Buckingham/Cumberland Livestock meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cumberland Virginia Cooperative Extension building. The program will include discussion of nutrition for project animals and possible visit from a local veterinarian. Members will also learn more about building good character.
