BUCKINGHAM – The Buckingham County High School soccer team tied Amelia County High School 2-2 in a James River District soccer match on Monday afternoon at the BCHS Athletics Complex.

The Knights took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but were unable to get them to hold. On the flip side, Buckingham dealt the Raiders their first non-win in James River District play.

“It's always competitive when we play those guys,” said BCHS head coach Chuck Meek. “Amelia came in here undefeated, and so far, they have been the best of a good bunch.”

Tinos Trejo scored off a header in the tenth minute to put BCHS ahead 1-0, before the Raiders scored just before halftime, but Malcolm Tillerson scored in the 52nd minute to put the Knights back up 2-1, before ACHS tied the game in the 68th minute.

Neither team was able to score over the balance of regulation, nor in the two five-minute overtime periods.

Buckingham carried the momentum in both overtime periods, but was unable to put the ball in the goal.

“We had our chances, but were unable to cash in, and that's been our story this season,” said Meek. “It comes with our youth and inexperience on the varsity, but we are in those situations in the first place, because those young guys are playing well.”

Buckingham (5-2-3, 4-2-2 JRD) is in third in the James River District behind Amelia and Bluestone. The Knights have suffered a 2-1 loss to the Raiders to go along with Monday afternoon's tie, and a one goal loss to Bluestone. Buckingham's other in-district tie came to Randolph-Henry.

“It's really close, and it's come down to a play here, or a play there,” said Meek. “I think things will be wide-open as we go into the final weeks of the season and into the tournament.”

Buckingham was scheduled to host Nottoway on Wednesday, and will travel to Randolph-Henry on Monday, April 29.
