FARMVILLE – Fuqua School had two opponents in Friday's 6-5 victory over Central Virginia Home School. The Falcons had to beat their non-confernece opponents, and they had to get it done on a deadline.

The promise of severe weather moved the start time for the game up an hour, which ended about six minutes before the severe storms moved into the area.

“It wasn't a conference game, and that concerned me,” said Fuqua School head coach Ted Cunningham, whose team defeated top ranked Southampton Academy 7-4 on Wednesday. “But we played well enough to get the win, and after we fell behind, we were patient and didn't force things. This is a game we may not have won last year.”

Fuqua scored a run in the bottom of the first, and after giving up two in the top of the second and another in the top of the fourth, came back to tie the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.

After giving up two runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Falcons responded with another two runs to tie the game at five apiece.

David Templeton doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and Davis Cyrus, Trent Jacobs and Josh Davis drew consecutive walks.

Davis' free pass knocked in Templeton, which prompted CVHS to change pitchers. The pitching change shut the door on the FS rally, but not before Jai Jamerson was able to tie the game on a sacrifice fly.

Jamerson came on in relief to pitch the final two innings, and looked solid in the outing. He gave up a single in the top of the sixth, but catcher Logan Byrd, who started the game on the mound, ended the inning on a throwout at second on an attempted steal.

Fuqua senior Carter Cunningham walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and after a single by Templeton, came home to score on a bunt single by Cyrus.

That was all the insurance Jamerson needed. He allowed two runners to reach base as the winds from the approaching storm played havoc on fly balls, but got the final out on a fly ball to center field to end the game.

“Logan and Jai had good outings today, and we were able to get some timely hits to support them,” said Cunningham. “We had a good start this season, and then we ran into some trouble, but I think we're starting to pick things back up, and at just the right time.

“At the beginning of the season, all of the coaches were talking that you could put the names of all of the teams in a hat, and draw the conference champion that way, and it's certainly played out that way. We have four games left, and we could run the table, or the table could run us.”

Fuqua was scheduled to host Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot on Tuesday, and will host Brunswick Academy on Thursday afternoon.
