Tigers fall 28-16 to Averett

Hampden-Sydney College’s football team had 430 yards of total offense in its season opener Saturday, but visiting Averett University scored two touchdowns each in the second and third quarters for a 28-16 win on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Nevertheless, the Tigers did benefit from a school-record 48-yard field goal from junior kicker Rhett Andersen in the fourth quarter, while senior captain and quarterback Clay Vick passed for 360 yards in his first collegiate start. Senior wide receiver Major Morgan, No. 3 pictured above, finished with an outstanding 13 catches for 169 yards. Junior tight end Ed Newman had four catches for 63 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers (0-1) visit Christopher Newport University next.
