Library funds appropriated

The library and community center projected for Buckingham County took a huge step forward during Monday’s board meeting.
Members of the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors voted to appropriate funds for the architect, engineer and contractor fees to start building the library and community center.
The community center and library will be at the former Dillwyn Primary School location at the intersection of Routes 15 and 20.
According to the meeting board packet, the 2019 budget had $250,000 reserved for a library and community center debt service payment.
The payment did not happen in fiscal year 2019 and would not be occurring until the future. The library and community center committee, according to the meeting board packet, recommended using that reserve amount to “help pay for architect and engineering fees the project since a payment was not necessary for fiscal year 2019.”
Because the amount was a reserve in the county’s budget, it required a vote from the board of supervisors in order to allocate the funds.
The board also voted to accept the bid at approximately $5 million from Jamerson Lewis Construction Inc. to be the contractor to renovate the school building for the library and community center.
Some members of the audience applauded following the vote.
