The Farmville Town Council unanimously approved a conditional use permit during its Aug. 14 meeting to allow Helton House Inc. to operate a day support program for adults with intellectual deficits in an area of a building located at 1713 W. Third St, Farmville.

According to Helton House staff, examples of developmental disability are Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism and Intellectual Disability. Individuals attend the day support program to learn these skills in a safe, supervised setting during the day in a school-like setting.

“Our day support programs provide skill-building support for the improvement of self-advocacy, self and environmental awareness, socialization, community integration, behavior modification, and daily living skills to name a few,” said Ed Helton, co-owner of Helton House.

The company has been in operation since March 2002 and currently has a facility located in Rice.

Helton House is expecting to provide services to 35 to 40 individuals at the new location.

According to town officials, the property under consideration does have a child learning center located on it in a separate building and the adjoining property is The Woodland Inc. which offers nursing care, assisted living, independent living and rehabilitation therapy.
