Storm fund breakdown

The coverage areas of Prince Edward, Buckingham and Cumberland received a collective total of approximately $60,000 from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) relating to tropical storms Florence and Michael last fall.

VDEM reported that on July 24 funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Public Assistance (PA) Grant Program were provided for post-disaster recovery funds to reimburse local governments, state agencies, and private nonprofit organizations.

According to the announcement, $14.7 million in total was awarded. The commonwealth contributed more than $2 million of this funding.

Agencies in Prince Edward, Buckingham and Cumberland received a total of $60,049.

“Expediting the federal funding to impacted public entities is a crucial component of the recovery process,” VDEM State Coordinator Jeff Stern said in the announcement.

Hampden-Sydney College received $2,655 relating to Michael, and Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department received $3,433. Meherrin Fire & Rescue received $12,871 relating to Michael and Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department received $3,279.

The Longwood University Real Estate Foundation received $13,107 relating to Michael.

Prince Edward County received $24,704 relating to Tropical Storm Michael.

Regional organizations such as the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative received $15,531 relating to Florence and $30,584 relating to Michael. Southside Electric Cooperative received nearly $2 million, $1,901,628 relating to Michael.
