Approximately 2,500 individuals and families attended the community-driven and energetic Truck & Tractor Pull held in the Town of Dillwyn off Wingo Road on Saturday.

Families and friends set up with chairs near the track or on top of truck beds in the parking lot. For some, this was their first truck pull.

Ivan “Chip” Davis, secretary with the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department, said the property that the truck pull took place is owned by Buckingham County. He thanked the county for allowing use of the land. Proceeds from the event will go to emergency services for the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department and the Buckingham Volunteer Rescue Squad. Proceeds from food and concessions will go toward emergency services for the county’s volunteer fire departments.

During the event, volunteers served meals, concessions and earplugs.

Tally Buck Hanes, a longtime Buckingham resident, was honored for his commitment and services to his neighbors in the county. He kicked off the event by driving a blue tractor down the track.

Several classes of vehicles took part in the pull, which included 7,800 Light Pro Stock Tractors, 6,200 National Sportsman FWD, 10,000 Super Pro Farm, 6,200 Small Block FWD, 12,000 Altered Farm, 6,200 Outlaw/Open FWD and Street Classes.

Both trucks and tractors, during the pull, had to drag a pulling sled across the length of the track.

Tractors and trailers dragged the pulling sled down the length of the track, which was approximately 350 feet. The sled’s weight varied based on the vehicle dragging it.

Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jason Wharam thanked members of the community and corporate sponsors for their support. He said he anticipates this becoming an annual event.

“We greatly appreciate their support,” Wharam said. “[The event] couldn’t have been done without everyone’s monetary donations.”
