Third Liberty Baptist Church is hosting a Hospitality and Usher Ministry Workshop on Saturday, July 20, starting at 10 a.m. The morning begins with free registration followed by a continental breakfast. Dr. Sandra Johnson, executive director of the Mt. Olivet Church in Richmond, will lead the hospitality workshop while Dr. Victor Lee Davis, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Richmond, shares his wisdom of the usher ministry. Third Liberty Baptist Church is located at 2244 C. G. Woodson Road in New Canton.
The Commonwealth Games is an Olympic-style amateur sports festival for male and female athletes of all ages and abilities. The Commonwealth Games is produced by Virginia Amateur Sports, Inc., a nonprofit corporation located in Roanoke. The concept of the State Games movement is to provide an avenue for positive personal development through sports, to recognize dedication and achievement, to promote health, fitness and the camaraderie of competition.
The 2019 Games will feature the sporting events: archery, baseball, basketball, bowling, chess, equestrian, figure skating, fitness competition, gymnastics, jujutsu, karate, kayaking, paintball, pickleball, racquetball, running, sand volleyball, shooting sports, skateboarding, snowflex, soccer, softball, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, track and field, volleyball, wrestling, yoga and many more.
To be eligible, a participant must be a resident of Virginia for 30 days prior to the first day or competition or a student enrolled in a Virginia academic institution or U.S. military personnel family members stationed at a base in Virginia. Exceptions include persons residing in adjacent states who belong to a club based in Virginia, which regularly competes in Virginia. Event dates are July 31-4 (Aug. 2 opening ceremonies in Lynchburg). There is no particular age required to participate in the Commonwealth Games. Buckingham County Parks and Recreation will host coed soccer sign-ups for ages four-five on July 24-25 and Aug. 8 and 13 from 5:30- 6:30 p.m. at the soccer field behind Dollar General Store. Practice days are Mondays and Wednesdays. Soccer season starts Aug. 26. Coed soccer sign-ups for ages 6-14 will take place on July 24-25 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the soccer field as well. Practice days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Soccer season for this age group begins Aug. 8. If any adults would like to help coach contact (434) 969-4242. Buckingham Fire and Rescue will be hosting a tractor pull at 364 Wingo Road on July 27. The gates open at 4 p.m. and the pull starts at 7 p.m. For more information, call (434) 390-2663. Rain date is July 28 at 7 p.m.
Enon Baptist Church, located at 9120 Andersonville Road, will be having Vacation Bible School from July 22-25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for ages 3 years to sixth grade.
