The Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA) Machine Pitch all-star team finished second in the recent 2019 Dixie Youth Baseball Machine Pitch District 5 Tournament in Sutherland and begins play in the state tourney Friday in Lunenburg.

The PEFYA All-Stars went 2-2 at the district level, experiencing both ends of lopsided results while ultimately showing improvement in defeat.

The boys began their run June 21 with a 16-1 blowout of the Blackstone all-star team. The next day, they also routed the Crewe-Burkeville All-Stars, 20-6.

On June 23, Prince Edward-Farmville took on the Dinwiddie National all-star team and fell 16-0.

After a bye, PEFYA faced Dinwiddie again, and though the final score was not much different — 13-0 — PEFYA Manager Tom Wears noted being proud of how his players competed.

“We played a much better game, but they had a big second inning,” he said. “… We hit the ball better tonight than we did the last time we played them, but their defense was sharp.”

Wears cited that his team is quite young, with 10 of its 12 members playing in the district tourney for the first time.

PEFYA plays the Lunenburg All-Stars at 6 p.m. Friday in the state tourney at Neblett Field in Victoria.
