The Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA) Angels all-star team fell to the Crewe-Burkeville All-Stars Tuesday night in the championship game, but it did not negate the PEFYA squad’s strong overall performance in the 2019 Dixie Softball Angels X-Play District 1 Tournament in South Hill.

After the PEFYA Angels lost 13-9 in a competitive fight against Crewe-Burkeville on Sunday, the eventual champions were able to pull away Tuesday for a 10-0 win.

“We had an off night for hitting the ball, and that happens at this age, at any age,” PEFYA Angels Manager David Schmidt said Wednesday morning.

His team finished the tourney with a 3-2 overall record. PEFYA opened with a 14-0 win June 21 over the Clarksville All-Stars, beat the Lunenburg Girls’ Softball All-Stars 13-9 on Saturday and topped the Blackstone All-Stars 15-2 in a Monday elimination game.

“They had a real good tournament,” Schmidt said of his players.

He highlighted his team’s three main pitchers: Sarah Lucas, Kendall Snead and Kelly Womack.

“They did really well in the circle,” he said. “… LottieMae (Hazlegrove) did really well behind the plate catching.”

He noted seven players were consistently strong on offense: Lucas, Snead, Womack, Hazlegrove, Kenna Schmidt, Lola Kimmel and Evelynn Noraas.

“I had five girls on the team this year that I have never coached on an all-star team, and they did well,” Manager Schmidt said, highlighting Kaelynn Allen, Ella Davis, Kamya Killebrew, Mary Reagan Phaup and Ta’Neja Walker.
