Buckingham County High School’s varsity boys soccer team was competitive Monday against host Dan River High School in the Region 2C quarterfinals, but eventually the Wildcats, seeded No. 2 on the east (E) side of the bracket, were able to pull away for a 5-2 victory. The undermanned No. 3E Knights were locked in a 2-2 tie with Dan River with about 10 minutes left in the game, but Buckingham Head Coach Brett Whittington noted a couple of mental lapses were costly. “The effort was there,” he said of his players’ performances. “We played hard for 80 minutes, so that’s all you can ask.” Sophomore Mekkha Carmon, pictured at left, and the rest of the Knights put together a standard-setting 10-5-2 campaign this year.
