The Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) golf team has earned an at-large invitation to the 2019 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships on May 14-17 at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, according to a H-SC Athletics press release.
Officials in the release noted that the Tigers are one of eight teams selected from the Southeast Region and among the 42 teams and six individuals invited to the 72-hole tournament.
This will be the H-SC program’s seventh trip to the national championship, though its first team invitation since 1994, the release cited.
“The team has worked extremely hard for this opportunity,” second-year Head Coach Chad Eisele said in the release. “It has been our goal this year to make the national tournament, so it’s a great sense of accomplishment to be invited. Now we want to go play at our highest possible level and compete for a national championship.”
The release stated that H-SC finished the regular season with a 295.13 team scoring average through 23 rounds. Officials in the release continued by highlighting that the Tigers earned one tournament title — the Tom Kinder Memorial — while compiling six top-five team finishes among eight top-10 efforts in nine overall tournament competitions.
On the individual level, H-SC has been led by junior Bruce Shober, who has averaged a 73.78 score, and freshman John Hatcher Ferguson, who has averaged a 73.87, the release reported. Shober and Ferguson were each All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) first team selections, and Ferguson was the ODAC Rookie of the Year as well.
Officials cited in the release that Eisele, the ODAC Coach of the Year, will fulfill his lineup at the nationals with junior Adam Hade, averaging a 74.52; sophomore Allen Smith, averaging a 74.61; and freshman Hunter Martin, averaging a 76.81. Hade and Smith were each All-ODAC second team honorees.
