Central Virginia Christian School fifth-graders recently competed in the local 4-H Public Speaking Contest. Five students earned purple ribbons and the opportunity to compete in the district contest later this spring, including Lillie Palmore, Piper Scialdo, Evelyn Johnson, Esther Jiang and Emma Ranson. Buckingham County Library is having Buckingham Family Fun Day Saturday, April 13. The event will include Robot Fun where participants will have an adventure with the Ozobots, build a robot and complete a challenge. The movie Robots will be shown at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Attend the Cattle Behavior and Handling Clinic at the BARN with special guest world-renowned clinician, Tom Curtin on May 9 and 10. Both days are from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Learn how to increase profitability without additional input costs through techniques applied during your daily routine, reduce stress during weaning, reduce illness/injury, increase effectiveness of vaccines and medications, and increase safety, milk production, weight gain and pregnancy rates. Cedar Baptist Church at 3932 Bell Road in Dillwyn is holding Easter services on April 19, Good Friday service at 7 p.m., followed by an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. with lunch to follow. Sunrise service will be 6:30 a.m. on April 21, followed by breakfast in the fellowship hall, and worship service at 8 a.m. There will be no Sunday School and no 11 a.m. worship service that day.

The Buckingham Extension Office will feature a Socrates Project on Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. The speaker, William Birkhofer, will explain the Socrates Project, which focused on the development of a guide to poisonous native plants in Virginia. The Socrates Project was initiated by the Old Rag Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists about two years ago. The idea was originally developed and advanced by Alfred Goossens and led to development of a peer reviewed first edition, featuring 11 poisonous plant species, in conjunction with Virginia Tech and Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, in consultation with the University of Virginia and the Blue Ridge Poison Control Center. A second edition of the guide, which will subsume updates of the first 11 species, plus an additional 14 species, is in development now, for production in early 2020. The fifth annual Super Bake Sale will take place at Food Lion on Saturday, April 20. All proceeds will be matched by the Town of Dillwyn for the annual Downtown Dillwyn Halloween Event.
