Firefighters from Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department and Farmville Fire Department performed a training exercise in responding to house fires Sunday.

The exercise took place at a house located on West Third Street, near the Wilck’s Lake Isle entrance. The house is owned by the Town of Farmville, and is the same house where a Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) team out of Quantico performed a training exercise recently.

Cayden Eagles, training captain for Farmville Fire Department, said the exercise Sunday was to train firefighters in responding to house fires.

He said there were new firefighters and firefighters with as much as 20 years of experience who took part in the Sunday exercise.

Hampden-Sydney Chief L.W. Gilliam said he was glad for the opportunities for he and the firefighters to train when available.

Dean Farmer, chief of Farmville Fire Department, praised the team for its dedication to the training exercise.

“I would like to thank Captain Eagles for his hard work and dedication to train the men and women of Farmville Fire Department,” Farmer said. “Captain Eagles goes above and beyond to ensure our staff is trained to respond to a variety of incidents. We are truly honored to have him as our Training Captain.”

Farmville Town Manager Gerald Spates said the house where the training exercises took place is set to be demolished.

“It gives them a good opportunity to get some training in that they can’t normally get,” Spates said about the training exercises.

Spates said for training exercises, unless located in a residential area or when businesses are in operation, or involves helicopters and other tools used with the FBI exercise, notification is typically not required.

He said the demolition of the house is part of a project to renovate the Wilck’s Lake area, which includes setting up the playground equipment the town received through a donation from the Farmville Lions Club.
