Members of the Cumberland County planning commission, during its meeting Monday, are set to recommend Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects to the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors for Fiscal Years 2019-2020 through 2023-2024 and examine a proposal to rezone four parcels of the Mill Race subdivision from industrial zoning (M-2) to agricultural zoning (A-2). The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Cumberland County Community Center.

The four parcels are among 13 lots in the subdivision, located on Almond Lane off French’s Store Road. The remaining lots are also zoned A-2.

According to the Planning Commission staff report, the Planning Commission held a public hearing on this proposal on Nov. 28, 2016.

“Due to the obligations contained in the Host Agreement for the Allied/ Republic landfill, the Commission directed staff that the application should be deferred until the legal issues are resolved, or until the statutory time limits are going to be met. Litigation has since been resolved,” the staff report cited.

The report cited that while the proposed rezoning fulfills the county’s comprehensive plan relating to providing sustainable resources and maintaining land use for various needs in the county, the rezoning has the potential to affect the potential for development in the proposed area in the future.

CIP projects were presented to the planning commission during a recent workshop. The requests were made from various county departments and organizations. Requests from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office included new hardware and updating the office’s LiveScan identification system. Requests from Cumberland County Public Schools included replacing the carpet at Cumberland County Elementary School and the football grandstands. Requests from county offices included installing a new HVAC unit and replacing and insulating older portions of the ceilings in the county administration building, and various fire and rescue departments requested a truck replacement and renovations and funds to help pay for the new Cartersville Volunteer Fire Department station.
