Cumberland County High School’s varsity boys basketball team took the first step in defending its regional crown by blowing out visiting No. 6 Rappahannock County High School on Monday 88-59 in the first round of the Region 1B tournament.
“We’ve been off for a week, so trying to get back into stride, so I was definitely happy with the outcome, especially on the defensive end,” Cumberland Head Coach Tyrone Mosby said.
The No. 3 Dukes led 24-12 after the first quarter, 43-24 at halftime and 62-35 after three quarters of play.
Leading Cumberland to the victory was senior guard Mark “M.J.” Patterson Jr., who poured in 21 points, nine assists, four rebounds and four steals.
Senior center Christian Jackson and senior point guard Noah Bland added 13 points apiece.
The Dukes (16-8) visit No. 2 Riverheads High School in the second round on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
