Eagles Enjoy Productive Week On The Hardwood

Note: The following is a weekly report released to The Herald by the Prince Edward County High School athletics department.
Boys Basketball
The Prince Edward varsity basketball team defeated Fuqua Saturday night 69-57.
The Eagles played a great defensive first half, holding the Falcons to only 19 points over the first two quarters, and the energy and hustle from the Eagles proved to be the difference throughout. Teequan Banks led all scorers with 22 and Amonte Vaughan added 16 for the Eagles.
The Fuqua game came less than 24 hours after the Eagles defeated Greensville County High School on Friday night 62-52.
The PE Eagles set the tone early on defensively with lots of energy and got out to a 7-0 lead, and maintained the lead throughout the first half on the strength of 10 first half points from Amontae Vaughan.
Up one at the half, PE came back out and used another 7-0 run sparked by Derek Robertson to start the second half. The PE Eagles' intensity was too much for Greensville to overcome in the 10-point decision. Vaughan led all scorers with 18 points, while Robertson added 13 of his own. The Eagles evened their Southside District record at 1-1.
Girls Basketball
The Lady Eagles lost three hard fought games against Greensville, Fuqua and Park View last week. On Friday night, the Lady Eagles loss 35-32 in the district game against Greensville.
Offensive woes plagued the Eagles in the first half, but used defensive pressure in the second half to cut Greensville's lead to two points with seconds left to play. PE had an opportunity to send the game to overtime, but the potential game-tying shot fell short.
Against Fuqua Saturday night, the Lady Eagles got off to a slow start and was down 12-4 after the first eight minutes, but used a 21-3 run in the second quarter to take a 25-15 lead at the break.
Fuqua cut the Prince Edward lead down three by the end of the third quarter. The Eagles got into foul trouble in the fourth as the Falcons went to the line 24 times.
Ashley Hamlin led in scoring with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the 48-46 loss. Lucia Davis had nine points and 10 rebounds, while Tamera Langhorne added eight points and Daneisha Bowles added seven points.
The Lady Eagles lost another close game in a 59-55 defeat to Park View on Tuesday night.
The Lady Eagles had a lot of turnovers in the first five minutes of the game, but picked up the intensity in the second quarter to go into the half down 33-28.
Prince Edward stayed close with the Dragons throughout the second half, but couldn't quite get a lead. Langhorne scored a game high of 23 points, while Banks had 12 points and three rebounds. Ashley Hamlin had eight points, 10 rebounds and two blocks and Lucia Davis had seven points, 10 rebounds and a block.
