True love can change the course of history. This Valentine’s Day weekend, witness the awesome power of love at the Moton Museum, with Illyria Theatre Company’s powerhouse production of “Loving,” Feb. 15, 16, 17 at 7 p.m.

It’s the love story that changed America — in 1967, Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter challenged the Supreme court to strike down the laws against interracial marriage. Their amazing, unbelievable-yet-true story comes to life in a wildly imaginative production, directed by upcoming star, director and performer, Garrett D. Reese.

“This show is very special to me,” says Reese. “It’s so important for our communities to see because it brings light to the Loving Vs Virginia case that took the attention of the United States in the 1960s. The main characters, Richard and Mildred Loving were from Bowling Green Virginia -just 20 minutes shy of where I live, and it is so nice to know that we had two individuals start the movement that empowers love equality within all races.”

I.T.C. has partnered with several organizations to create a weekend of events surrounding this production. Along with the performances at 7 p.m., the schedule includes an after-show dance party Friday night, while Saturday’s events include a free reading of the children’s book, A Case for Loving at 10 a.m. Saturday with 10 giveaways of the book from the Virginia Children’s Book Festival, and a community art project led by Audrey Sullivan of Red Door 104; and Sunday’s special event is a Love song cabaret at 3 p.m.

Family friendly and each night includes a lively talkback session afterward with cheese plates provided, and wine for sale. The extra community events are free and open to the public.
