Buckingham County High School’s varsity girls basketball team reasserted itself Monday night as being among the top-two teams in the James River District (JRD) this season. The Lady Knights avenged a 41-38 road loss Jan. 18 to Goochland High School by topping the Lady Bulldogs 58-49 at home Monday.

“We had key players to step up,” Buckingham Head Coach Kelly Chambers said, “and then we had our bench to also contribute, offensively and defensively, and that was the winning factor for tonight is that we had everybody to really step up and play as a team.”

Senior guard Jayda Chambers led the Lady Knights with 24 points and 15 rebounds, junior guard Hannah Davis scored nine points, and freshman forward Lauren Randolph added eight.

Of Randolph, Coach Chambers said, “She was key for the offense in the first half, hitting some big threes …”

The coach noted that freshman guard Alana Ballowe also stepped up and provided key minutes, particularly on defense, to allow others to rest in a rotation that has shrunk to eight players due to injuries.

The game was tied 14-14 after the first quarter, Buckingham led 29-27 at halftime and 47-38 after three quarters.
