Did you know that yoga is good for your mind, body and soul? Central Virginia Community Health Center offers yoga classes to help you improve all three. Yoga is a physical and mental practice which can be adapted to anyone’s body shape or ability. Numerous yoga genres exist to meet student’s needs and preferences: Yin, Hot, Hatha, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Restorative, Bikram, Anusara, Jivamukti, Forest, Prenatal, Vinyasa, to name a few.
The Wednesday night yoga class at the Wiley Fitness Center in New Canton is a Vinyasa class which follows a Rocket Yoga sequence. Vinyasa yoga links breath to movement. Students use their own audible breath to flow from one posture to another and the breath creates a hum on which each student can hear and focus. The Wednesday night Vinyasa postures flow at a methodical pace where students hold each pose for one to two breaths before moving on to the next posture.
Yoga provides focus, strength, flexibility and stress relief. Yoga increases strength by incorporating arm balances, backbends, and inversions to increase physical strength, endurance and ability. Flexibility and improved mobility are improved by elongating muscles through controlled and safe movements leaving the body open and supple.
Yoga not only improves the physical body, but by linking the breath to the mind, yoga becomes a moving meditation which allows practitioners to quiet the mind and provide relief for the sympathetic nervous system. For more information or to sign up for the class, contact CVCHS at (434) 581-3271, extension 10601.
