LCVA winter exhibitions to open in January

The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts (LCVA) recently announced the opening of two solo exhibitions: Morgan Everhart’s Flowers for my Failures and Eva O’Leary’s Spitting Image.
Everhart is also creating a site specific installation, I’ll take my chances, in the LCVA’s Main Street Gallery Window. The opening reception for both exhibitions will be held Friday, Jan. 25, from 5:30-8 p.m. LCVA Friends & Partners receive early entry at 5 p.m. The exhibitions will be on view from Jan. 26 through March 31.

Flowers for My Failures is an introspective exhibition balancing on the edges of abstraction and traditional still life painting. Everhart’s colorful, lush paintings are not only visually stunning, they also raise questions about the nature of failure in professional and personal life. I’ll take my chances will transform the LCVA’s front window into a beautiful installation, which will allow viewers to experience the feeling of walking inside a painting. It is an invitation to look more closely and consider how one painting can have two different surfaces and vantage points.
Spitting Image features photography and video exhibition that confront the intertwining power dynamics of media, imagery and identity construction. In this exhibition, O’Leary photographs and films the reactions of tween and teenage girls (11-14 years of age) through a two-way mirror. This exhibition sensitively raises complex and nuanced questions about identity and sense of self. Alex Grabiec, the LCVA’s curator of exhibitions, remarked that “Everhart and O’Leary are artists with compelling visions of our world. Their art is moving and meaningful – we found it to be particularly relevant to many conversations taking place today.”
These exhibitions and their related programs are presented by the Hotel Weyanoke, which also generously supported Everhart’s creation of her site-specific installation at the LCVA.
