Falcons go 1-1 in holiday classic

Fuqua School’s varsity boys basketball team went 1-1 in the Joseph A. Ellis Holiday Classic held this past weekend at Franklin High School.

On Friday, the first day of the classic, the Falcons fell 66-57 to Ocean Lakes High School, a Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 6 school. On Saturday, Fuqua ended its run in the event with a 62-59 last-second victory over Amelia County High School.

Falcons junior Matt Osborn hit the game-winning three-pointer with 1.3 seconds left on the clock. He was named to the classic’s all-tournament team.

Fuqua also went 1-1 at a Christmas tournament hosted by Atlantic Shores Christian School, in Chesapeake, on Dec. 21-22. After losing 71-31 to VHSL Class 6 team First Colonial High School the first day, the Falcons defeated Hampton Roads Academy 65-57 on the second.

Junior Jaylen Hempfield, of Fuqua, was named to that event’s all-tournament team.

The Falcons (6-5) visit Kenston Forest School on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
