Roy Tucker Garrett Jr. age 69 of Cumberland County, Virginia went home to his Lord on Sunday December 16, 2018.
He was born in Farmville, Virginia on July 30, 1949, the oldest child of the late Roy and Myrtle Garrett Sr. Roy, affectionately called Tuck(s) or Junior by his siblings, was big brother to Joyce Thompson (Ronny), Sandi Scarborough (Phil), Tommy Garrett (Wendy), Becky Bartow (Mark) and Charles Garrett (Connie). Roy lived in Buckingham, Virginia as a young child but spent most of his life in Cumberland County. He attended Cumberland County High School before entering the workforce at the age of 17. Roy married and was father to three children; Faye Garrett Honebein (Alfred), Keith Garrett (Chris) and Karen Garrett Cubbage (Kenny). He was Papa Roy to six granddaughters; Andrea Holman Jones (Tim), Alyssia Dawn Holman (Dominic), Autumn Kaye Holman, Gillian Leigh Cubbage, Graceyn Faith Cubbage and Glory Elizabeth Cubbage. He was great-grandfather to Timothy Alan Jones III and Emma Daye Jones.
Roy worked for many years at the Farmer’s Co-Op in Farmville driving a fertilizer truck, until he retired in 1998. Through his job he developed a love for farming and especially enjoyed meeting farmers in the surrounding communities. Roy had two great passions; hunting and serving with the Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department. If it was hunting season, Roy was in the woods. When he couldn’t get around like he used to, he was riding the roads or at Midway Grocery hanging out with his friends. Arguably his first passion was being a first responder. First as a member and then chief of the RDVFD. He thrived on the relationships he had with his fellow firefighters and his hunting buddies.
Roy’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service on Friday, December 21 at the Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department located at 2145 Cumberland Rd., Farmville, VA 23901. Family visitation will be from 5:00-6:00 PM with the Memorial Service at 6:00 PM. Fellowship and a meal will follow the service at the Randolph District Community Center (Address the same).
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation via check to the RDVFD with a memorandum “In Memory of Roy Garrett Jr.”.
