Budget amended for STEPS roof

Prince Edward supervisors unanimously approved an amendment Tuesday to the county’s Fiscal Year 2019 budget in the amount of $954,628 for the replacement and repair of the roof of the STEPS Centre building.
No one spoke during the public hearing that preceded the supervisors’ 8-0 vote during the December meeting of the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors.
County Administrator Wade Bartlett provided insight into why the amount for the roof replacement and repair had grown to $954,628.
“As you all know, the board entered into an agreement to obtain ownership of the STEPS Centre, which we did, and then it was that we were going to renovate the whole STEPS Centre, but the first part of that was the roof,” he said during the meeting. “We did a contract. It was originally for $744,628, plus $7.50 per square foot for any decking that needed to be replaced.”
“The original contract included 10,000 square feet, but once you get off the old EDPM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer) and the insulation, then you can really see the roof, and it ended up we replaced about 37,000 square feet of that decking, which brought the total up to that $954,628,” Bartlett continued. “Actually, we’re not completely done, but it looks like it’ll be about $12,000 less than that in total, but you never know. There’s a couple little things that need to be done, so my recommendation is to stick with the amount that was advertised and approve the budget amendment above and appropriate the same funds. Any that’s not funded will just fall back to the bottom line that we can use for the interior renovations.”
Bartlett said he visited the building after the last hard rain that came about a week before the recent major winter snowstorm. At that time, work was still in progress, but he was positive on the progress being made.
“There was just a trickle down some of the walls where the scuppers are, and that was the only place that I saw that there was any leaks,” he said.
He noted that the building will be formally inspected on at least two more occasions.
