‘In tune to progressing’

Buckingham County High School’s varsity girls basketball team enjoys the benefit of a reunited, powerful back court and expected, new standouts this season, helping them off to a 2-0 start already.

The Lady Knights defeated host Central Lunenburg High School 58-28 on Friday and topped visiting Amelia County High School 41-31 on Dec. 4.

“We have been talking about what our vision is going to be for this year, and basically we want a successful season,” Buckingham Head Coach Kelly Chambers said. “If that means coming out on top in the district, that would be great, but we want to measure the success and the growth in our overall individual and team performance throughout the year.”

Last season, the Lady Knights finished at 11-11 after falling in the Region 2C quarterfinals to Nelson County High School.

The services of two now-graduated players, in particular, will be missed — power forwards Honei Hill and Keana Jones.

This year, the Lady Knights feature three seniors, three juniors, three freshmen and one sophomore.

Chambers noted that she sees the potential for Buckingham to advance further in the regional tournament than it did last year.

“I think that if we really put our minds to it — I think the girls are really in tune to progressing and playing together as a team — that we can really push ourselves to move forward,” the coach said, adding that some hope is invested in the help that could come from a couple new faces on the roster.

The Lady Knights will once again be counting on the abilities of guard Jayda Chambers, now a senior.

“She’s our overall leader who’s someone who we can depend on every night just offensively, making her way to the basket, creating open shots for her teammates and also pushing the ball forward in transition, because she does a lot of our dirty work for us,” Coach Chambers said. “Last year, she was our stat leader for each individual area …”

Jayda will be reunited this season with guard Shamari Wingfield, also a senior, who was sidelined for much of last season due to injury. Wingfield will make a great target for Jayda’s outlet passes in transition.

“She’s one of those big things that come in a small package, very much so,” Coach Chambers said of Wingfield. “She just has a great presence on the floor.”

New to the varsity team is junior guard Hannah Davis, who the coach said brings a vibrant energy to the team.

Chambers also highlighted the development of junior forward Kaya Amos, who “helps keep us jelled on the floor.”
