Fuqua School’s varsity girls volleyball team struggled with consistency this year, but there were unmistakable highlights, including seniors Regan Ware and Hannah-Gray “HG” Schmidt receiving All-Blue Ridge Conference recognition.

“We were happy that Hannah-Gray and Regan received second team all-conference,” Lady Falcons Head Coach Breanne Allen said in a speech at the banquet where she presented team awards.

The Lady Falcons finished the 2018 season with a 6-11 overall record, which included a 3-7 mark in the conference. They qualified for the conference tournament and fell in the first round to host New Covenant School.

In her speech, Allen announced Fuqua’s team awards, starting with Most Valuable Player (MVP), which went to Ware.

“Regan received MVP every game with her kills, serves and blocks, which made her the top scorer,” Allen said. “Regan ended up with 126 kills and 22 aces for the season.”

The Best Offensive Player award went to Schmidt.

“As a senior and our only setter, HG took on the responsibility of one of the captains and played every minute of every game,” Allen said. “She never complained about being tired or needing a break. She ended the season with 234 assists and 40 aces for our team.”

Sophomore Lexy Tharpe drew the Best Defensive Player honor.

“Lexy was one of the most flexible players and would go into any position I asked her to go into,” Allen said. “Lexy was a hustler and was not afraid to get down and use her knee pads, which made her the easy pick for the Best Defensive Player.”

The Coach’s Award went to junior Abbie Schmidt, who Allen said “was a player that was pleasant to be around, stayed enthusiastic and positive on and off the bench, never missed practice and was always willing to listen and learn.”
