PE School Board, Board Of Supervisors Still Working On Meeting Date

PRINCE EDWARD — County supervisors want to sit down with the school board to talk about SOLs, but the “when” is still the question.
<p class=”1colHerald”>“I, personally, will be attending a training session and…have trouble being back in town that day by 5 o’clock,” commented School board Chairman Russell Dove at the school board’s November 5 meeting, referring to the board of supervisors’ requested November 18 meeting date and time.
At least four school board members, Division Superintendent Dr. David Smith cited, will be in Williamsburg as part of a state conference—making five that would not be able to attend at the board of supervisors requested meeting.
The back and forth continues. Supervisors had expressed an interest to meet and talk about the recent round of SOL tests. The school board, in October, had proposed November 12, but that conflicts with the Virginia Association of Counties annual meeting. Supervisors had, in turn, proposed November 18, just prior to their rescheduled regular monthly meeting at 5 p.m.
And now the school board is offering three potential Thursday dates beginning with December 4, 11, and 18 with a 6 p.m. start time.
It was not a good year for the County’s public schools. The elementary school, though no longer a Focus School (in the bottom ten percent of Title I schools in the state), is accredited with warning at the state level; the middle school is accredited with warning, but has been deemed a Focus School; and the high school was within one three-year average in one statistical category of being fully state accredited. They, too, are accredited with warning at the state level.
