Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) basketball team made seven of their eight free throw attempts in the final minute to come away from Winchester with an 89-75 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon.

The victory pushed the Tigers’ overall record to 4-2, making them 1-1 in the ODAC.

With the Tigers trailing 6-5 after two minutes and six seconds of play, the Tigers recorded the next nine points and 15 of 17 to lead 20-8 at 13:59 after a Malik Crute three- pointer.

Shenandoah bounced back and trimmed the deficit to 22-18 at 10:55, but the Tigers went on another big run, this time 12-1, to lead 34-19 following a Brendan McHale three-pointer at 7:01.

The Hornets trimmed the deficit to six, 39-33, at 1:32, but H-SC ended the half with a Chaise Johnson three-pointer followed by a Kevin Quinn free throw to go into halftime ahead 43-33.

Shenandoah took it to the Tigers to open the second half, as H-SC struggled to make shots and protect the ball.

After 6:31 of second-half play, the Hornets shaved all but two points off their halftime deficit to trail 51-49 at 13:29.

Still ahead by only two after eight minutes, H-SC went on a 7-0 run in more than 72 seconds to jump back ahead by nine after a Justin Reid layup with 10:30 to play.

The Hornets battled back to within five, 65-60, at 4:45, but the Tigers responded with another big run of 10-2 as layups from Warren Zager and Jake Hahn and triples from Drew Scott and Johnson delivered the final punch to put H-SC ahead 75-62 with 3:07 left on the clock as Shenandoah trailed by at least nine the rest of the way.

Johnson, a junior point guard, scored a game-high 22 points on only nine shots as he shot 6-for-9 overall, 2-for-4 from three-point range, and 8-for-8 at the free throw line.

Zager stuffed the box score with 14 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Hahn came off the bench to contribute 13 points in 15 minutes, converting 6-of-8 field goal attempts.

McHale posted nine points, eight rebounds and four assists as he went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range.

Scott connected on three shots from beyond the arc to go with four boards.

Quinn added nine points and three caroms.

Alan Dabney led Shenandoah with 21 points to go with five rebounds.

Jaylen Williams tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Christopher Chaney double-doubled with 17 points and 10 boards.

Jalyn Jarrett shot just 1-for-11 but added seven assists and five steals.

While the Tigers committed 22 turnovers, they compensated for the lack of ball security with sizzling shooting percentages of 56.9 percent overall, 52.4 percent from three-point range with 11 makes, and a 20-for-26 performance at the charity stripe.

The Hornets committed only nine turnovers, but the Hampden-Sydney defense put the clamps on with strong shot defense, limiting Shenandoah to 35.6 percent from the floor and 29.7 percent from three with 11 makes. The Hornets also went just 12-for-20 at the foul line.

Hampden-Sydney won the rebounding, 45-32, utilizing a strong paint presence.

The Tigers host No. 17 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for V Foundation Cancer Research Night as well as the Jaycees Farmville Holiday Toy Drive.
