The Farmville Grand Illumination, scheduled for Friday from 6-8 p.m., is expected to have activities, warm drinks and treats and an uproarious chorus of “O Christmas Tree” in honor of the 24-foot tall tree to be illuminated at the High Bridge Trail Plaza.

The festivities are sponsored by the Town of Farmville, Farmville Downtown Partnership and High Bridge Trail State Park.

High Bridge Trail State Park is set to hold a wintertime activities for children, and the Prince Edward Christmas Mother is set to sell teddy bears to raise funds for the organization, which helps provide presents for children in need.

The Fuqua School Band and the Bruce Sullivan Trio is set to provide music during the event.

The Farmville Downtown Partnership and others will provide treats and warm beverages such as hot chocolate and cider while supplies last.

Ilsa Loeser, with the Farmville Downtown Partnership, said the event is expected to have a few speakers, then the lighting of the tree.

She encouraged families to come a bit early at 5:45 p.m. as to not miss the festivities or a chance to take a photo in front of the tree.

“You might want to think about wearing some fun Christmas clothes,” Loeser said. “It makes a great Christmas card.”

Loeser said this will be the first year the event is expected to have a group singalong where participants can sing “O Christmas Tree.”

“The Grand Illumination is a great event for families,” Loeser said.

She encouraged those who might wander downtown before and after the event to consider shopping locally for the holidays.

The 24-foot tree is provided by the Town of Farmville, Farmville Town Manager Gerald Spates said.
