SEPTEMBER 23 — David Leigh Garrett, 62, of Farmville, died peacefully Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Born July 25, 1952, he was the son of the late Harold Lee and Helen Morgan Garrett.

A graduate of Prince Edward Academy and Virginia Polytechnic Institute he always enjoyed the art of conversation. Though he spent many years in the Tidewater region of Virginia, his heart always desired to return to the scenic beauty of his hometown, Farmville, where he spent the last decade. Some of his favorite memories include: delivering the Farmville Herald a thousand days in a row without missing a day, sledding, fishing, rafting and swimming at Watkins pond with his four brothers, his beloved years in boy scouts where he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout and was known as “Buck” by many of the younger scouts he taught to swim, constructing a club house from repurposed material with his youngest brother Randy; happy times with the Nelson family; and being a father and grandfather to “his girls.” He is greatly missed.

He is survived by a daughter and granddaughter, Angela and Sierra Partenope, respectively of Richmond; his former wife, Mary Nelson Dunston of Glen Allen; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold Morgan and Nadine Garrett of Farmville, and Randy V. and Roxanne Garrett of Richardson, Texas; six nieces; three nephews; and two aunts; Rita Morgan Stone and Carolyn Garrett. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas A. Garrett and Charles “Nick” Garrett.

In accordance with Mr. Garrett’s wishes, there was no public funeral.
