Giving back to the community is what it is all about. And a fresh fruit pie doesn’t hurt either. The monthly outdoor yard sale at Sprouse’s Corner in Dillwyn provides both. Come out Saturday, Sept. 8, from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. and purchase homemade baked goods, barbecued chicken, and check out the other items vendors have for sale. The mission of this group is to give a portion of the proceeds back to those in the community in need. Recently, a young lady competing in karate competitions presented with difficulty funding a competition out of the country and was provided some proceed monies to assist her in her quest to compete in Belize. Why not come out and get something good to eat and find some treasure items within the vendor booths while helping others in their time of need? Unfortunately, Buckingham does not currently have recycling of plastics. STEPS in Farmville accepts plastics if you are interested in recycling there.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) invites farmers, pesticide dealers, pest control firms, certified applicators, homeowners and golf course operators to participate in the 2018 pesticide collection program. The program collects unwanted, outdated or banned pesticides and disposes of them in a safe manner. VDACS, through its Office of Pesticide Services (OPS), provides this service at no cost to participants. Buckingham’s location for pesticide collection will be Sept. 19 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Farmville Southern States, 182 Smi Way, Farmville. Participants must transport their unwanted pesticides. If participants cannot safely containerize the unwanted pesticides for transport, the disposal contractor may arrange assistance on a case-by-case basis. Only pesticides will be accepted. Pesticide contaminated material (for example, pesticide contaminated fertilizer) will not be accepted as part of the disposal program. In addition, the program does not accept motor oil, paint, fuel, fertilizer or other chemicals. Participants need to complete a pesticide disposal registration form ahead of time and return the completed form to Jeffrey.rogers@ vdacs.virginia.gov or mail to Office of Pesticide Services, VDACS, P.O. Box 1163, Richmond Virginia 23218. The form is available at vdacs.virginia.gov/ pesticide-collection.shtml or by contacting the program at (804) 786-3798.

Buckingham Triad will meet Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall on Route 60 in Buckingham County. Triad’s work is to improve the quality of life for seniors. By providing an opportunity for the exchange of information between law enforcement and older persons, Triad can also focus on reducing unwarranted fear of crime.
