A 66-year-old man based in Spout Spring died Saturday following an accident in Cumberland County in which he was thrown from his motorcycle, a Virginia State Police (VSP) representative said in a release.
VSP Public Relations Director Corinne Geller said Paul L. Cashwell, 66, of Spout Spring, died at the scene of the accident. He was wearing a helmet.
Geller said the accident took place Saturday at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Route 60, less than a mile east of Route 13.
“A 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on Route 60 when a 2013 Ford Focus pulled out from a parking lot to make a left turn onto Route 60,” Geller said in the release. “The motorcycle was unable to avoid the Ford Focus and collided with the vehicle.”
Geller said the driver of the Ford vehicle, Meriwether V. Smith Jr., 68, of Cumberland, was transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.
“Smith was charged with failure to yield the right of way,” Geller said.
Geller said the crash remains under investigation by Trooper E.L. Thornton.
