The Prince Edward-Farmville Youth Association (PEFYA) Debs All-Star team experienced something Saturday it had not tasted in more than two years at the state level — a defeat. But the girls responded like the two-time defending state champions that they are, earning wins Sunday and Monday to carry a 3-1 tourney record into Tuesday as the 2018 Virginia Dixie Softball Debs State Tournament continues in Farmville.

“We bounced back,” PEFYA Debs Manager David Schmidt said.

PEFYA was set to play the Lunenburg County All-Stars, 6 p.m. Tuesday at North Park in the PEFYA Field of Dreams complex on Industrial Park Road.

The Prince Edward-Farmville All-Stars looked poised to go on another undefeated state run Friday when they began their tourney play with a 23-2 victory over the Brookneal All-Star team.

Shauneice Beasley starred in that win, hitting a grand slam home run and a two-run homer.

On Saturday, PEFYA took on the Powhatan National All-Stars. Caroline Seal hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to give Prince Edward-Farmville a 5-2 lead that grew to 8-3 after four innings.

Then Powhatan began to generate hits with impressive force. After making the score 8-6, Powhatan produced a one-out grand slam in the fifth that suddenly gave it a 10-8 lead. Shortly thereafter, it added a one-out three-run homer to go up 13-8.

Powhatan also did a lot with two outs on the board in the sixth inning, producing a two-run homer and another three-run shot, leading to a 20-8 victory.

“Our outfielders weren’t tall enough,” Schmidt said. “They hit the ball. There was nothing you could have really done to defend it.”

He noted the loss helped motivate his players.

“And we knew coming into it — into this game and into the whole tournament — that everybody was gunning for us, knowing that we’ve done it for two years,” he said. “And we had already had phone calls from different people saying that they were coming for us, which that’s the name of the game.”

On Sunday, PEFYA rebounded with a 7-2 victory, eliminating the Blackstone All-Stars.

Beasley hit another homer and contributed in the circle along with Gracie Hodges and Sierra Wharam.

Monday brought a showdown between travel ball teammates as PEFYA took on the Buckingham County All-Stars. Buckingham took an early 3-0 lead on a couple of homers, but Prince Edward-Farmville tied the game up in the bottom of the second and went up 6-3 in the fifth when T’Asia Beasley hit a three-run shot. Seal added a solo homer in the seventh for a 7-3 win.
