You can’t unring a bell

The meaning of this old adage is that once somethings are done, they can’t be undone and we all must live with the consequences. On July 11, the town council will hold a final vote on the Martin proposal to tear down historic homes and replace them with a new multistory apartment building.
If the town council votes to approve this proposal (against the overwhelming 5-2 recommendation by the planning commission to deny the proposal) these historic homes will be forever gone and that action cannot be undone and the building of a new multistory apartment building that is completely out of character with the historic district will set a precedent that also cannot be undone. Our beautiful historic district will be forever changed and that cannot be undone.
We have been warned that if these changes happen, we may lose our designation as an historic district and also lose the ability to use tax credits for the renovation of homes and structures like the Weyanoke Hotel. I love our little town. This place matters and this vote matters. Please attend the town council meeting on Wednesday, July 11 beginning at 6:45 p.m. and join me in asking the town to vote against the Martin proposal and not to ring that bell.
