Barbara Hope Almond Smith, 92

CUMBERLAND, June 10 — Barbara Hope Almond Smith, 92, of Cumberland, widow of Meriwether Vaughan Smith, died on Thursday, June 12, 2014 in Farmville. She was a daughter of the late Charles Miller Almond and Grace Hope Parkerson Almond. Mrs. Smith was born in Chesapeake on January 28, 1922. She married Meriwether Vaughan Smith on September 25, 1944.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Women’s Club of Cumberland and a member of Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church, where she was a clerk for 36 years and also a deaconess emerita.

She is survived by a son, Meriwether Vaughan Smith Jr.; two granddaughters, Kathryn Fontaine Smith Hopgood and Elizabeth Meriwether Smith Riddick; a grandson, William Morgan Smith III; great-granddaughter, Eva Fontaine Hopgood; two great-grandsons, William Jasper Riddick and Ryker Quade Hopgood; sister, Vera Almond Meeking and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an older son, William Morgan Smith II.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 14 at Fitzgerald Baptist Church, Cumberland.
