CHS Track Finishes Season With Several State Medals

FARMVILLE — The Cumberland High School boys and girls outdoor track teams ended their season on Saturday, June 7 after competing in the 1A/2A Virginia High School League Track and Field State Championship. The Dukes claimed many medals and came home with one state champion.

Junior Annesha Harris won the girls 100-meter hurdles event, while also taking second place in the 300-meter hurdles, and sixth in triple jump.

Freshman Tonishea Ford took eighth place in discus, while sophomore, Ebony Jones, placed eighth in the 400-meter category. Jones was also a part of the CHS girls 4X800 relay team that placed eighth at the meet. Senior Tieshia Crump, freshman Angel Parran, and Ford were on the relay team, as well. Jones, Crump, Harris, and Ajah Smith took fifth place in the 4X400 girls relay event. The CHS girls track team finished ninth as a team with 28.50 points.

The Lady Dukes finished their season as the James River District champions, VHSL 1A East Conference 44 champions, and the VHSL 1A East Region runner-ups. Harris was also named the 1A East Regional Track and Field Championships Female Athlete of the Year.

“Our kids fought hard through all of the events this past weekend. They all won medals and placed high in the final standings. This weekend was the ending of a much improved athletic season for Cumberland athletics and coaches,” commented Cumberland athletic director, Alfonso Bell.

Junior Tony Ford, of the Cumberland boys outdoor track team, placed fifth in long jump, third in 300-meter hurdles, and seventh in the 200-meter category. Senior Davonn Taylor took second place in 400-meters. He was also a part of the 4X800 relay team that placed sixth at the state meet. Matthew Bapties, Matthew Horton, and Jared Halvorsen were also members of that relay team.

Horton, Taylor, Bapties, and Ford placed sixth in the 4X400 relay team event.

The Dukes boys track team ended their regular season as the James River District runner-ups and ninth at the state meet.

Thirteen track members also were named to the VHSL All-State track team. Those members were: Annesha Harris, Tonishea Ford, Ebony Jones, Tieshia Crump, Angel Parran, Ajah Smith, Matthew Horton, Matthew Bapties, Davonn Taylor, Jared Halvorsen, Daquan Trent, John Bapties, and Tony Ford.
