Stewart wins Republican Primary

The Heart of Virginia took part in the Tuesday election, showing a majority vote for Freitas in Cumberland and Prince Edward counties, and Stewart a majority vote in Buckingham County.

Corey Stewart won the majority vote for the U.S. Senate Republican Primary, which took place in Virginia Tuesday.

Stewart received a total of 44.87 percent of the vote in 2,569 precincts throughout Virginia, or 136,482 votes, narrowly beating candidate Nick Freitas, who received 43.12 percent or 131,144 votes, and E.W. Jackson, who received 12.02 percent or 36,519 votes, according to election results from the Virginia Department of Elections.

Freitas received 329 votes in Prince Edward, totaling 52.31 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting. Stewart received 208, or 33.07 percent of the vote and Jackson received 92, or 14.63 percent of the vote.

In Cumberland, Freitas saw a similar trend with 282 votes, or 52.13 percent of the vote. Stewart received 202 votes, or 37.34 percent, and Jackson received 57 votes, or 10.54 percent.

Stewart saw a majority in Buckingham County, with 359 votes or 46.74 percent of the vote. Freitas received 309 votes, or 40.23 percent of the vote and Jackson received 100 votes, or 13.02 percent.

Stewart, the at-large chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, is set to run against Democratic candidate Tim Kaine during the November election. Kaine currently holds the Senate seat.

Stewart visited Farmville in February to discuss position on economic growth, immigration reform and countering what he termed a culture of political correctness.
