It was a first for downtown Farmville, thousands of bright yellow rubber ducks bobbing and “racing” down the Appomattox river at The United Way of Prince Edward County’s inaugural Duck Derby. The derby, held Friday afternoon, was a winner for area residents before the first duck entered the water. Community sponsors and duck purchases helped the United Way to surpass its goal of raising $55,000 to distribute to its 20 local partners.

Prizes were awarded to the owners of the first, second, third and last place duck. One thousand dollars for first place, $500 for second, $250 for third place and $25 for the duck who came in last. The biggest winners of the derby are the many area residents who will benefit from the proceeds of the derby. As previously reported in the Herald, “buying a single $5 duck could buy a bag of cat food for the SPCA, a $25 Quack Pack of six ducks could provide free medicine for someone who visits The Heart of Virginia Free Clinic, and a $100 Flock of 25 ducks could provide a family food for a week at Madeline’s House.” There is something especially satisfying knowing that your donation has that kind of impact.

The Prince Edward County United Way is optimistic the Duck Derby will become their signature project. With so many in our area benefiting from the fundraiser we fully support and look forward to many more Duck Derby’s in our area. See you at the races!
