The incredible turnaround season of Prince Edward County High School’s varsity baseball team came to a close Wednesday evening on the doorstep of a state tournament berth.
The No. 3-seeded Eagles fell 6-1 to host No. 1-seeded Goochland High School in the Region 2A tournament semifinals.
“We had some opportunities,” Prince Edward Head Coach Brandon Kenny said. “We left a few guys on base. We didn’t really get the big inning that we needed. We didn’t have any bad innings, defensively.”
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning, two in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Eagles’ lone run came in the fifth.
“I think we had two errors, they had three, so it was a pretty clean game,” Kenny said. “We threw strikes. Wade (Jenkins) only walked two batters, so he kept us in the game. I thought he did a good job on the mound.”
Jenkins, a sophomore, pitched the entire game for the Eagles.
Goochland recorded seven hits, while Prince Edward had two — one apiece from junior Austin Mahan and sophomore Kaleb Hensley.
“We did draw six walks,” Kenny said. “That’s where a couple innings we had guys on, but we couldn’t capitalize.”
To reach the semis, Prince Edward edged host No. 2 Amelia County High School 6-5 in the quarterfinals and beat visiting No. 6 Bluestone High School 7-6 in the first round.
The Eagles finished the season with an overall record of 13-9, a remarkable turnaround after going 1-18 last year.
“I would say this was a big step for our program in really becoming relevant again and showing surrounding counties and other teams that we’re going to be a force to be reckoned with for the next few years,” Kenny said. “I think we have some talented players coming through who like to compete, like to play.”
